2001 Vans Warped Tour

the
2001 Vans Warped Tour

Yesterday, Terry, Tony, Robert, and I attended the 2001 Vans Warped Tour, which featured 29 bands on 4 different stages. For me, the day started quite busily, as I drove all around Monona to get gas, get my check, cash my check, get Tony, and finally pick up Robert and Terry from my house. By the time we got out on the road to Milwaukee, it was 10:35.
When we arrived at The Rave, it was 11:55. We got inside, and scrambled around to find a schedule. Eventually, we found someone with a schedule who was willing to let me copy it onto a separate piece of paper. So, anyway, we made our way to the 2nd floor stage to see Fenix TX. Let me tell you, their drummer was really good, but the rest of the band sucked. Every single song sounded the same.
Then, we had to choose between watching A.F.I. and The Ataris on that stage, or going upstairs to the main stage to watch the end of Kool Keith and see all of H2O. We chose Kool Keith and H2O because then we would already be up there for Sum 41. So, we saw the end of Kool Keith. Wow, did they suck ass. Rap groups do not fit in at a punk/rock/ska tour. Anyway, then H2O came out and they were actually pretty good. They were the first good band we'd seen so far.
After H2O, Sum 41 came out and started to rock. Unfortunately, I had only got 3 hours of sleep the previous night, so I fell asleep during Sum 41. (I couldn't help it. The balcony chairs were so comfortable) Anyway, I woke up just before the drummer did an awesome drum solo. I also was awake to see them play "Fat Lip" and "Pain For Pleasure." During the latter, they all switched instruments, which was cool.
After we left that area, we made our way down to the 2nd floor stage to see Less Than Jake. At this point, Robert and Tony were separated from me and Terry, so the two of us enjoyed LTJ by ourselves. LTJ, as I expected, kicked ass. They are very energetic on stage. But, anyway, we had to leave them after 15 minutes so that we could see the Vandals on the 3rd floor.
When The Vandals took the stage, I had no idea that they would be as funny as they ended up being. They played many songs that I knew, and their setlist is at the bottom of this page. But they were simply the funniest band we saw for the whole day. During their last song, "I Have A Date," which was sung by the guitarist Warren Fitzgerald (guitar on the song was played by usual singer Dave Quackenbush), he took off his shirt and pulled his shorts way up, until they were basically really big thong underwear. Then he put his arms through the sides and pretty much sang the rest of the song with his arms through his undies.
At this point, we pretty much just mulled around outside watching some skateboarders, a roller-blader, and a BMXer on a big half pipe. We also ate overpriced pizza and drank overpriced Gatorade. Then we went back inside to try and locate the stage that Good Charlotte would be on. We eventually did, but me and Tony left before they started so that we could get a good spot for 311.
So, we went all the way back up to the 3rd floor to find a good spot for 311. We couldn't find one, and ended up standing against a radiator in the balcony. But regardless of our spot, 311 rocked the crowd. They had more people in the room than every band before them. They were very good and I enjoyed their set thouroughly. Their set list is also at the bottom of this page.
Well, they were the last band we saw. We left before Alien Ant Farm because we didn't wanna sit through their whole set (and delay our departure) just to hear them play "Smooth Criminal." So, we left and, all in all, it was quite a good day.
